Scenes from "The Stone Gods"

Assignment: Create a page from a graphic novel for a sequence of events in the pages of "The Stone Gods" that you present(ed) on, using photos that you shot yourself in or around school. The page should consist of 6 photos, which you then add captions and text balloons to. The events depicted should be self-explanatory and be uploaded to each of the group member's portfolio. I will post them here in order. Add a comment to this post where you explain why you chose this sequence of events, and why it is significant to understanding of the book.

Example of Graphic Novel page:

  • Group 1  – Jennifer, Bine, Tatum, Vanessa  - Start to page 41
  • Group 2  – Thien Co, Megan, Milou, Lisa - 42 to 82
  • Group 3  – Thomas, Paulus, David, Abid  - 83 to 113 -- LATE!!!

  • Group 4  – Kenza, Honey, Simone, James - 114 to 140

    • Group 5  – Nils, Ayman, Rayno, Ayrton - 141 to 194  ---- LATE!!!

    • Group 6  – Mo, Lucas, Antono, Moustafa - 195 to end of book

    1. Our group; Vanessa, Tatum and Jennifer, chose this scene because it contains a lot of dialogue which is easier to format to a graphic novel than a thought process. In addition, in this scene Billie and Spike meet for the first time which starts one of the main themes in the book; love. Furthermore we also get to see how Manfred commands Billie to make this interview to what he deems to be appropriate for the public. This gives the reader a behind the scenes look into the media on Orbus and see how it's just a facade. So we think that our scene is significant to the understanding of the book because it introduces one of the main themes of the book (love) as well as giving the reader context by providing a characteristic of a dystopian novel (dystopia pretending to be a utopia).

      1. "love" is not a theme, "love" is a topic upon which the author has an opinion and a point to make. The theme is what point the author is making. In your 6 frames, what point is the author making about love?

    2. Abid, Paulus and I, Thomas, chose to use the passage on page 82. Since we had actually to choose a passage from page 83 until the end of part one, we know that we chose the wrong page number. However, we still agreed to choose this particular passage because it contains a lot of dialogue in contrast to the other pages, so it was easier to complete this task within a short period. Furthermore, we would say that this is one of the most important passages in addition to the conversations between Billie and Spike, because the conflict between man vs. himself (or in this case herself) is clearly visible. This is somewhat the beginning of their relationship for as they later strand on planet Blue, we would say. This is the reason why we chose this passage since it is an essential part for the rest of part one and even for the rest of the book. We perceived that the author is actually saying that love is a somewhat weird concept, thus, it does not matter whether he/she has the same gender as you (and whether he/she is of the same species or not). Of course there are many more options concerning Billie and Spike, nevertheless, they are “vague” and abstract (compared to page 82) to use it for creating a good graphic novel.

      1. I like how you have not just mentioned "love" but also explained what the theme is (i.e., what point about "love" your page illustrates.

    3. We ( Rayno, Ayrton, Nils and Ayman) chose this scene because it discusses the reason why the robots take over from the humans and this is the main focus of the rest of the part and book. The part was also one that was actually doable in terms of making a graphic novel. We felt that the elements in this part were possible to represent fully in a graphic novel. The piece is an accurate representation of the primary focus of the rest of the part and ae to be turned into a graphic novel in the time we had. This together made this piece the best piece out of the pages our group was assigned to read and discuss.

      1. If your group thinks that the main focus of the book at all, or even in the pages that you have read is that robots are taking over from humans, then you need to reconsider your understanding.
