Part 2

Part 2 is called Language and Mass Communication.   This part looks at the way language is used in mass media, such as newspapers, magazines, the internet, including social media, radio or film.  Among other things, we look at how the medium of delivery affects its reception or production.

The three learning outcomes specified by the IB for this part of the course are:
  • Examine different forms of communication within the media.
  • Show an awareness of the potential for educational, political or ideological influence of the media
  • Show the way mass media use language to inform, persuade or entertain.
Like Part 1, the IB assesses Part 2 via:
  • FOA (Further Oral Activity) -- in V5 (5%) and V6 (20%) count as your SE grade spreekvaardigheid; the best one will count as 15% of your IB grade.
  • WTs (Written Tasks) -- in V5 count as a report grade
  • Paper 1 -- in V5 two practice Paper 1s count as report grades; and in V6 will count as your SE grade schrijfvaardigheid (25%); the IB Paper 1 will be in the May vacation of V6 and will count for your IB certificate (25%).
