Part 1

Part 1 - Language in cultural context focuses on how language develops in specific contexts, how meaning is determined by context and how people express their identities through language. Via the study of non-literary texts, we look at how culture and context shape texts and their interpretation.  The IB specifies three learning outcomes for Part 1:

• Analyze how audience and purpose affect the structure and content of texts.
• Analyze the impact of language changes.
• Demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and context.  

The IB assesses Part 1 via:

• FOA (Further Oral Activity) -- in V5 (5%) and V6 (20%) count as your SE grade spreekvaardigheid; the best one will count as 15% of your IB grade.
• WTs (Written Tasks) -- in V5 count as a report grade
• Paper 1 -- in V5 two practice Paper 1s count as report grades; and in V6 will count as your SE grade schrijfvaardigheid (25%); the IB Paper 1 will be in the May vacation of V6 and will count for your IB certificate (25%).
